How to Play Snaps
Snaps: The Classic Word-Sleuthing Game
Snaps is a fun and simple word-guessing game that can be played with two or more people. It requires no special equipment, making it perfect for car rides, parties, or anytime you need a quick and engaging activity.
Getting Ready to Play
- Players: You can have as many players as you like!
- Choosing the Snapper: Decide who will be the “snapper” for the first round. Players can take turns being the snapper throughout the game.
The Snapper’s Role
The snapper is responsible for thinking of a secret word or phrase (e.g., a celebrity name, a movie title). Here’s how they give clues:
- Consonants: The snapper uses descriptive statements where the first word of the statement starts with the same letter they’re trying to convey.
- Example: If the secret word is “Banana” and the snapper wants to reveal the first letter “B,” they might say, “Better get ready for some fun!”
- Vowels: Vowels are revealed using snaps of the fingers. Each vowel has a corresponding number of snaps:
- A – 1 Snap
- E – 2 Snaps
- I – 3 Snaps
- O – 4 Snaps
- U – 5 Snaps
- Example: Following the “Banana” example, after revealing the “B,” the snapper might snap twice for the second letter “A.”
The Receiver’s Role
The receivers listen to the snapper’s statements and snaps, trying to guess the secret word or phrase.
- Putting It Together: As the clues unfold, the receivers should combine the first letter of each statement with the snapped vowels to figure out the hidden word.
- Calling Out the Answer: Once a receiver thinks they know the word, they can shout it out.
- If they’re correct, that round is over, and the snapper reveals the secret word.
- If they’re incorrect, the snapper continues giving clues until someone guesses it or they decide to reveal the answer.
Adding a Twist (Optional)
- Snap Pool: If two players call out the same guess simultaneously, a “snap pool” is created. The snap pool combines the discarded clue piles from both players. The first player to correctly guess the word in the snap pool wins that pile of clues for use in future rounds.
Snaps: Fun and Flexible
Snaps is a versatile game that can be adjusted based on the players’ ages and preferences. You can choose simple words for younger players or challenge yourselves with more complex phrases.
