While Microsoft Edge is the default browser on Windows 10, you can disable it and use an alternative browser like Chrome, Firefox, or Opera. However, you cannot completely uninstall Microsoft Edge as it is an integral part of the Windows operating system.
Method 1: Change the Default Browser
- Open the Settings app on your computer.
- Navigate to “Apps” then select “Default Apps.”
- Under “Web browser,” click on the current default browser (most likely Microsoft Edge) and select a different browser from the list.
Method 2: Disable Microsoft Edge Group Policy (Enterprise Edition Only)
- Open Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc).
- Navigate to “Computer Configuration” > “Administrative Templates” > “Windows Components” > “Microsoft Edge.”
- Double-click on “Allow Microsoft Edge Side by Side browser experience.”
- Select “Disabled” and click “OK.”
Method 3: Rename the Edge Folder (Temporary Workaround)
- Open File Explorer and navigate to “C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application.”
- Right-click on the “Microsoft Edge” folder and select “Rename.”
- Rename the folder to “MicrosoftEdgeOld.”
Additional Notes:
- Disabling Microsoft Edge may affect certain Windows features, such as accessing certain websites or using Cortana.
- If you need to use Microsoft Edge for specific purposes, you can always rename the folder back to its original name or reinstall the browser.
- Using an alternative browser may provide a different user experience and may not support all features available in Microsoft Edge.
