What Is Quick Duplicate Post?

Quick Duplicate Post adds a Duplicate link to every row in your WordPress post and page lists. Click it and a complete copy of that post is created instantly as a draft — including all custom fields, featured image, categories, tags, and custom taxonomies. No API key. No account. No external service.

Key features:

  • One-click Duplicate link in the post list row actions
  • Copies all post meta — ACF fields, Yoast SEO data, Rank Math data, page builder layouts
  • Copies all taxonomies — categories, tags, and every custom taxonomy
  • Copies the featured image
  • New post always saved as a draft — never published automatically
  • Works on posts, pages, and any custom post type including WooCommerce products
  • Configurable title prefix, redirect behaviour, and per-post-type control
  • Nonce-secured — only users with edit_posts capability can duplicate

Installation

  1. Go to Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin in your WordPress admin, select the ZIP file, and click Install Now. Or download the ZIP from GitHub and upload it.
  2. Click Activate Plugin.
  3. Hover over any post or page in the list — a Duplicate link appears in the row actions immediately.
  4. Optionally visit Settings → Duplicate Post to configure post types, title prefix, and redirect behaviour.

How to Duplicate a Post

Open any post list — Posts, Pages, or any custom post type. Hover over a row. The row actions appear beneath the title. Click Duplicate.

WordPress creates a full copy of the post as a draft and either opens it in the editor or returns to the post list, depending on your redirect setting. A green notice confirms the duplication.

The duplicate is always created with Draft status — it will not go live until explicitly published after editing.

What Gets Copied

Every duplication copies the following from the original post to the new draft:

  • Post title (with the configurable prefix prepended)
  • Full post content — Gutenberg blocks, classic editor content, shortcodes
  • Post excerpt
  • Featured image (linked by attachment ID — not re-uploaded)
  • All post meta — custom fields, ACF, Yoast SEO, Rank Math, page builder data stored in meta
  • All taxonomies — categories, tags, and every custom taxonomy
  • Post parent and menu order (for hierarchical types like Pages)
  • Comment status and ping status

What is not copied: edit lock, last editor record, post date, revision history. The duplicate starts clean, authored by the user who triggered the duplication.

Settings

All settings are at Settings → Duplicate Post. Three options are available.

Enable for Post Types

Every public post type registered on the site is listed here. By default the Duplicate link is enabled for Posts and Pages. Tick any additional post type — WooCommerce products, portfolio items, ACF-defined post types — to add the Duplicate link to that list.

Title Prefix

A short prefix is prepended to the title of every duplicate so it is identifiable in the list. The default is Copy of, producing titles like Copy of About Us. Change this to any text, or leave it blank to copy the title exactly as-is.

After Duplication, Go To

Choose what happens after a post is duplicated:

  • Edit the new draft — opens the block editor immediately. Best when each duplicate is edited straight away.
  • Return to the post list — stays in the list view with a success notice. Best for batch duplicating multiple posts in sequence.

WooCommerce Products

Go to Settings → Duplicate Post, tick product in the post types list, and save. A Duplicate link appears in the row actions on your WooCommerce Products list.

All product meta is copied — price, sale price, stock status, SKU, weight, dimensions, shipping class, attributes, product categories, product tags, and gallery image IDs.

Compatibility

Quick Duplicate Post uses only WordPress core functions — wp_insert_post(), get_post_meta(), add_post_meta(), and wp_set_object_terms(). Compatible with any theme and any page builder that stores layout data in standard post meta.

Confirmed compatible page builders: Elementor, Beaver Builder, Bricks, Oxygen Builder, Kadence Blocks.

WordPress: 6.0 – 7.1  |  PHP: 7.4 – 8.3  |  WooCommerce: compatible

Frequently Asked Questions

Will duplicating a post create a duplicate content problem for SEO?

No. Duplicates are always saved as drafts and are not publicly accessible. Search engines cannot index a draft. Change the slug before publishing to avoid crawl confusion once it goes live.

Can I duplicate a post and keep the same slug?

WordPress enforces unique slugs. When a duplicate is created, WordPress automatically appends -2 to the slug to prevent a collision. Edit the slug manually in the block editor before publishing.

Does it copy Advanced Custom Fields data?

Yes. ACF stores all field data in standard WordPress post meta. All field types — text, image, repeater, flexible content, relationship, gallery — are copied correctly, including serialised data structures.

Who can use the Duplicate link?

Only users with the edit_posts capability — Administrators and Editors by default. Authors, Contributors, and Subscribers do not see the link. The capability is checked both in the UI and server-side on every duplication request.

Can I remove the "Copy of" prefix?

Yes. Go to Settings → Duplicate Post, clear the Title Prefix field, and save. All future duplicates will use the original title exactly. Previously created drafts are not renamed.

Is it safe to use on a live production site?

Yes. The plugin only ever creates new draft posts and never modifies the original. Every duplication request is verified with a WordPress nonce and a server-side capability check before any database write occurs.
