How to Spell Check in Microsoft Word on a Mac or PC

Spell-checking in Microsoft Word is a useful feature for ensuring your documents are free from spelling errors. Here’s how to use spell check in Microsoft Word on both Mac and PC:

On a Mac (Microsoft Word for Mac):

  1. Open Microsoft Word on your Mac.
  2. Create a new document or open the document you want to spell-check.
  3. As you type, Word will underline words with red squiggly lines if it detects a potential spelling error.
  4. To manually initiate a spell check:
    • Go to the “Review” tab in the top menu.
    • Click on “Spelling & Grammar” in the “Proofing” group.
  5. Word will start scanning your document for spelling and grammar errors. If it finds an error, it will suggest a correction. You can choose to “Change” the word to the suggested correction, “Ignore” the suggestion, or manually edit the word.
  6. If Word reaches the end of your document without finding any more errors, it will display a message confirming that the spell check is complete.

On a PC (Microsoft Word for Windows):

  1. Open Microsoft Word on your PC.
  6. Word will continue checking your document until it reaches the end. If it finds any errors or suggestions, it will prompt you to review and make changes.

In both cases, you can customize the spell-check settings by going to the “Word” (on Mac) or “File” (on PC) menu, selecting “Preferences” (on Mac) or “Options” (on PC), and then choosing “Spelling & Grammar.” Here, you can configure options like autocorrect and choose the language for spell checking.

Remember to review and confirm any suggested changes made by the spell check to ensure the accuracy of your document. Spell check is a valuable tool, but it may not catch context-related errors or certain grammar issues, so it’s essential to proofread your document thoroughly as well.
