Ko explains that both lip pimples and cold sores can appear on the lip border, and it can be difficult to distinguish between them. Cold sores, also known as oral herpes, are caused by the herpes simplex virus and necessitate treatment with antiviral medication. Unlike pimples, cold sores appear more like blisters and are often preceded by flu-like symptoms or a tingling sensation.

To treat a pimple around your lips, you can use benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. Benzoyl peroxide helps to clear your pores and eliminate bacteria in the area, while salicylic acid reduces inflammation and dries out the pimple. Both products are effective in treating acne and can also be used for lip pimples, according to Ko. You can find creams, gels, lotions, and cleansers that contain these ingredients over the counter. However, stronger products may require a prescription. Apply a small amount to the pimple once or twice a day for three days or as directed on the package. If you experience any discomfort or allergic reactions, stop using the product and consult a doctor for alternative treatments.

If you suffer from frequent breakouts or persistent acne, you may benefit from prescription medication. A dermatologist can prescribe Retin-A, an oral medication commonly used to treat acne. As a longer-term preventative treatment, Retin-A can be helpful if prescribed by a dermatologist.

What are the causes of lip pimples? The skin at the border of your lips has numerous pores that contain sebaceous glands, which produce oil. If dirt, makeup, or other substances block the oil secretion, the pore may become irritated and inflamed, leading to a pimple on your lip.

While genetics may predispose some individuals to acne, these factors may contribute to the development of pimples around your lips:

Greasy foods: Consumption of greasy foods can transfer grease to the skin around your lips, leading to acne. Using a mild cleanser to clean your face can help eliminate the grease and reduce your risk of acne.

Lip products: Lipstick, lip balm, and lip gloss can clog the pores around your lips and cause acne. If you’re susceptible to acne, select non-comedogenic beauty products that do not block your pores. Also, avoid getting lip gloss on the skin above your lip, known as the vermillion border, as it can obstruct your pores.

Hormonal changes: Androgen hormones can increase sebum production from sebaceous glands, resulting in more oil. These hormones may rise during puberty and at certain stages of a menstrual cycle. Acne can be treated by regulating hormonal imbalances with medication and birth control pills.

Medications: Certain medications, such as those containing testosterone, corticosteroids, and lithium, can cause acne. Speak with your doctor about alternative options if these medications are causing the acne.

Your diet: Some individuals may find that certain foods, such as sugary treats, fried foods, or dairy products, can lead to acne. Research indicates that dairy products may be linked to a higher likelihood of developing acne, though the reason for this is not yet clear. One theory is that hormones in dairy products can trigger inflammation. If you observe that a particular food is causing breakouts, it’s a good idea to avoid it. Additionally, you can improve your skin by taking care of your microbiome (the healthy bacteria living in and on your body) through the use of daily probiotics.

Stress: Although stress may not directly cause acne, it can make it worse, according to the Mayo Clinic. Finding healthy ways to manage stress, such as practicing yoga, meditating, or making time for enjoyable hobbies, may be helpful.

It’s important to avoid squeezing or touching these pimples, and instead, apply a warm compress to the affected area, cleanse your face with a gentle cleanser, and keep your skin clean and dry.
