Canada Alerts LGBTQ+ Citizens of Potential Dangers of U.S. Travel

Canada has updated its travel advisory for the United States to warn LGBTQ+ citizens of the potential dangers they face in some states. The advisory cites recent laws and policies in some states that discriminate against LGBTQ+ people, such as bans on same-sex marriage and adoption, and restrictions on transgender healthcare.

The advisory warns LGBTQ+ travelers to:

  • Be aware of the laws and policies in the state they are visiting.
  • Travel with a copy of their passport or other identification that shows their gender identity.
  • Be prepared to answer questions about their sexual orientation or gender identity.
  • Avoid public displays of affection.
  • Stay in well-lit and public areas.
  • Trust their instincts and leave a situation if they feel unsafe.

The advisory also encourages LGBTQ+ travelers to contact the Canadian embassy or consulate if they experience discrimination or harassment.

The update to Canada’s travel advisory comes as the United States is seeing a wave of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. In recent months, several states have passed laws banning transgender athletes from participating in school sports, and others have restricted access to gender-affirming healthcare.

The Human Rights Campaign, an LGBTQ+ advocacy group, called Canada’s travel advisory a “necessary step” to protect LGBTQ+ travelers. “This is a clear warning to LGBTQ+ people that they may face discrimination and violence in some parts of the United States,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, president of the Human Rights Campaign. “We urge all LGBTQ+ people to be aware of the risks and to take precautions when traveling to the United States.”

The update to Canada’s travel advisory is a reminder of the ongoing challenges facing LGBTQ+ people in the United States. Despite progress in recent years, there are still many places where LGBTQ+ people are not safe. It is important for LGBTQ+ travelers to be aware of the risks and to take steps to protect themselves.
