What happened with Mamunul Haque, the joint secretary general of Hefazat-e-Islam, a Qaumi madrasa-based organization in Bangladesh

A dramatic situation arose at a resort in Narayanganj with Mamunul Haque, the joint secretary general of Hefazat-e-Islam, a Qaumi madrasa-based organization in Bangladesh.

After detaining Mamunul Haque for several hours, Hifazat-e-Islam supporters and madrassa students retaliated and took him away from detention, a police official from Sonargaon police station said.

Police say he was surrounded by some locals and activists of the ruling party, Student League and Youth League of the Government of Bangladesh, at a resort in the Sonargaon area near Dhaka on Saturday afternoon.

They alleged that Mamunul Haque went to the resort with a woman he was not married to. On the other hand, Mamunul Haque said, he went there with his second wife.

At one point the police also arrived. A video went viral showing several people questioning Mamunul Haque in a room.

One man asked, “Who is this woman to you?”

In reply, Mamunul Haque said, “My second wife. I married her in a lawful manner.”

Then another person asks, “When did you get married?”

Mamunul Haque told them, “Two years.” He also said he went to the resort for vacationi.

In the video, Mamunul Haque has been seen saying, “You are all abusing me.”

In the video, some people were introducing themselves as journalists and asking various questions to Mamunul Haque and some were introducing themselves as Student League or Youth League of the ruling party.

Sonargaon Police Station OC Operations Mofidur Rahman was present when Mamunul Haque was detained in his room. He told BBC Bangla that he had claimed the woman who was with Mamunul Haque was his second wife.

Mr. Rahman said they are discussing the matter with Mamunul Haque and are looking into the matter.

Meanwhile, when the video of assaulting Mamunul Haque spread on Facebook, after 7 pm, Hifazat-e-Islam leaders and activists and students of the madrasa came to the Royal Resort and vandalized it and took Mamunul Haque away.

However, the police claimed that Mamunul Haque has been handed over to the leaders of Hefazat-e-Islam.

Mohammad Faisal, Central Assistant Publicity Secretary of Hefazat-e-Islam, went to Narayanganj around 9 pm to fetch Mamunul Haque. From there, he told BBC Bangla that Hifazat-e-Islam had given a 24-hour ultimatum to the administration to arrest and punish those who assaulted Mamunul Haque.
