Syria’s de facto leader, Ahmad al-Sharaa, has accused Israel of using false pretexts to justify its attacks on Syria, stating that he is not interested in engaging in new conflicts as the country focuses on rebuilding after the end of Bashar al-Assad’s reign. Israel has moved into a demilitarised zone in Syria created after the 1973 Arab-Israeli war, including the Syrian side of Mount Hermon. Sharaa argues that Israel’s arguments have become weak and that their recent violations pose a threat of unwarranted escalation in the region. He also emphasizes that diplomatic solutions are the only way to ensure security and stability, and that “uncalculated military adventures” are not wanted.
