Stranded Cruise Ship Finally Sails Out of Belfast Lough
Belfast, October 28, 2024 — After three unexpected days anchored in Belfast Lough, the stranded cruise ship Ocean Explorer has finally resumed its journey, much to the relief of its 1,200 passengers and crew.
The luxury liner, operated by Northern Voyages, found itself stuck in Belfast Lough after engine failure forced it to halt just outside Belfast Harbor. According to company representatives, the problem began as a minor issue but soon escalated, leaving the vessel unable to proceed under its own power.
Despite the disruption, passengers were reportedly well cared for on board. Northern Voyages arranged for extra provisions and entertainment, with local vendors delivering fresh supplies daily to keep guests comfortable. Passengers were able to enjoy a range of activities, including entertainment shows, spa sessions, and gourmet meals, which kept spirits high during the unexpected pause.
Technical teams from Belfast Harbor worked tirelessly alongside engineers from Northern Voyages to troubleshoot the issue, eventually bringing in parts from across the UK to ensure the ship’s safe departure. After conducting extensive tests, the engineers cleared the vessel for travel, and the Ocean Explorer resumed its journey toward the Scottish coast on Sunday evening.
In a press statement, Northern Voyages expressed gratitude to Belfast authorities and harbor staff for their support during the incident. “We are immensely grateful to the Belfast Harbor team, who provided vital assistance to ensure our passengers’ safety and comfort during this delay,” said a company spokesperson.
Passengers who faced delays will be eligible for compensation, according to Northern Voyages, and many expressed their appreciation for the hospitality shown by Belfast and the cruise line’s attentive staff.
The ship’s next stop is scheduled for the Isle of Skye, where passengers are eager to continue their scenic journey across the British Isles.
